College Life Management Assessment

Assessment is a systematic approach to gathering information about a student’s characteristics, needs, capabilities, goals, plans, and experiences that help or inhibit college and career success. When too much weight is given to a single assessment that provides only a limited view of a student’s potential, the chances of making ill-informed decisions increases. On the other hand, when the results of multiple assessments are combined, a fuller, more accurate picture of the student is provided, and the effectiveness of decision-making is improved with minimal adverse impact. The practice of using a variety of assessments is referred to as the whole-person or integrative approach. The assessment services we provide are designed to help you understand, in advance, how well-prepared your student is for the total college experience.

CSDCI assessments were developed after a thorough review of the pertinent literature on college student development and evaluation, a review of similar instruments, counseling and advising college-bound and college students, and preparation of pilot assessments. Questions about the student’s own self-knowledge, self-discipline and college-knowledge were carefully selected and written with clarity and sufficient detail that the student could reasonably be qualified to provide candid and accurate responses without the assistance of outside sources.

The assessments are valid for use as tools to generate discussion and make recommendations based on well-established and agreed-upon criteria by professional school and college officials. All CSDCI counselors participated in a training that was independently reviewed and approved by the National Board for Counselor Certification (2015) to ensure that each student’s responses, which vary in content and quality, would receive the same judgement regardless of the assigned counselor. These assessments have not been statistically normed as they are not used to indicate how well one student does compared to others.

College student development assessment is rarely conducted in advance as it requires a substantial commitment of time and financial resources. The fee for assessment services includes the administration, scoring, analysis, and interpretation of each instrument; and preparation of an individual report of the results that includes recommendations for consideration by students, parents when making decisions about college applications, essays, recommendation letters, scholarships, interviews and academic majors. Adjusting to college can be overwhelming even for the brightest, gifted and most talented students. Why? Because while most students have the academic skills required to get into college, many lack the life skills required to stay in and get out with a degree. Don't let your student go to college clueless!

The first few weeks new students are on campus, all types of policies, procedures, rules and regulations are being fired at them from different directions. Students get so caught up in the excitement of their new-found freedom and friends that they don't even remember half of what they have been told in orientation programs. And when things settle down a couple of weeks later they realize a lot of things have fallen through the cracks and it's too late to do anything about them. Before long, they are in over their heads. They get frustrated, stressed out and can't cope. Then they begin to have doubts about whether or not they even have what it takes to succeed in college. And the next thing you know, they want to call it quits. Don't let this happen to your student!

The College Life Skills Course® is an early, comprehensive, enlightening and rigorous introduction to higher education and the college experience. This course has been evaluated and recommended for college credit by the American Council on Education, the major coordinating body for all the nation's higher education institutions. Your student will get a sneak preview of the college experience in a proactive, non-threatening, risk-free environment. The common pitfalls, hurdles, and stumbling blocks on the path to graduation will be identified. And because college is a full-time job, students will experience what it is like to work in a fast-paced, information-packed setting and survive.

Who Should Attend

The College Life Skills Course® is open to 11th and 12th grade high school students; and first time-in-college or returning adults who have a high school diploma or its equivalent. It is highly recommended for athletes, gifted and talented students, honor students, students who are first in their families to attend college and students who doubt they have what it takes to succeed.

Research shows that students who enroll in college success courses are less likely to stop-out, drop-out, or flunk-out of college. They experience fewer surprises, feel better prepared, and are more confident about their ability to cope with college pressures. They also take charge of their lives and accept personal responsibility for their successes and failures.

What Makes This Course Unique?

  1. StudentIt's Early! The best time for students to learn how to manage their lives in college is before they get there. Why make students wait until they are totally immersed in the college experience to get an understanding of what is going on around them, and what they will need to do to survive? Taking this course early gives students more time to process the information and put it into practice.

  2. It's Comprehensive! Everything students need to know about how to get in, stay in and get out of college---with a degree---is now in one place. This course covers all three phases of the college experience---admission, matriculation and graduation.

  3. It's Enlightening! Students learn what goes on behind the scenes in higher education. The course sheds light on how colleges work and clarifies differences between what students think college is about and what it is in reality. The course also dispels the myths often perpetuated in the media about the college experience.

  4. It's Rigorous! In the course, students are asked to respond to seven questions that apply to seven areas of their lives. Each answer builds the framework for a step-by-step plan of action for achieving their goals. Students complete written assignments, prepare a college portfolio, write a reflection paper and participate in group discussions. The course's intensive, questions-based format gives students a sneak preview of the commitment of time and energy required to successfully complete assignments that are the equivalent of a typical college-level course---all in a non-threatening, risk-free atmosphere.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to describe the characteristics of a successful lifestyle; identify their motivating drives; identify their personal preferences, skills and abilities; formulate meaningful and attainable goals; develop a detailed plan of action; predict obstacles that hinder college success; and respond to obstacles in life and college.
